People’s Action Party

  • 21 November 1954: Formation of the People’s Action Party
  • 1955: Limited Self-Government Election; Singapore’s first
    • PAP lost
    • They didn’t have enough time to prepare, having just formed in 1954
  • 1959: Internal self-government for Singapore was attained
    • Singaporeans now have the right to vote
    • They also had more control over government (more local involvement)
  • 1959: PAP won 43 of 51 seats
    • The PAP was the first local government following attainment of internal self-government
    • 30 May 1959: Lee Kuan Yew became Singapore’s first prime minister
